Myofunctional orthodontics – Study Club 2
The function of the orofacial tissues determines their form. If the clinician wants to improve a malocclusion, he/she should change the function as well to reach a stable result. It is imperative to train patients to breathe through their noses with lips closed. Also the position of the tongue at rest and during swallowing determines if orthodontic treatment will be successful on the long term. So oromyofunctional issues should be addressed in combination with orthodontic treatment.
